There’s a gravestone in the village of Heptonstall, West Yorkshire, that has struggled in vain for many years to be inconspicuous... it bears the inscription: "Sylvia Plath Hughes."

The use of the legendary feminist poet's married name has been seen by many visitors as a provocation too far.

After all, her estranged husband and fellow poet Ted Hughes is said to have been in bed with his lover when she died and there have been (hotly disputed) allegations that he physically abused her during their tumultuous seven-year marriage.
